Nyahururu residents yesterday protested in the town over alleged grabbing of public road reserves and utility plots and corruption at the municipal council. Business in the town was paralysed after the residents supported by members of Laikipia Development Forum engaged the police who had been deployed to counter the demonstration. It took more than three hours for the police to quell the protests and they arrested Laikipia Development Forum chairman Robert Ndegwa. The protesters want Local Government minister Musalia Mudavadi to dissolve the council accusing the sitting officials of corruption.
The residents claim the officials grabbed a 20 acre piece of land meant for a public cemetery and another plot meant for road expansion around Nyahururu Municipal Stadium. "No consultations had been made with stakeholders before allocating these plots to private developers," said Ndegwa. “We will not allow this to happen and that is why we demand that the minister dissolves the whole council. We want the government to act and protect the land to bury our relatives from being grabbed,” he said. The chairman said they have written several times to the ministry.
